Woods Canyon Lake

Woods Canyon Lake did not exist until the mid-1950s, when the Arizona Game and Fish Department threw an earthen dam across a canyon high on the Mogollon Rim and let the snowmelt pool behind it. The result was a compact reservoir, roughly 55 acres, cupped in a forested canyon at around 7,500 feet, deep enough at its middle to hold cold water through the summer. That cold, high water is the whole point: it is trout habitat, and the lake was created to give Arizonans a place to catch them.

It worked. Woods Canyon quickly became the flagship of the Rim Lakes, the loose string of small lakes strung along the top of the plateau, and it remains the busiest and most developed of them. Rainbow trout are stocked through the open season, and brown trout hold over in the deeper water, so a kid with a bobber and a grown-up with a fly rod can both do well from the same shore. Because it is stocked and steady rather than wild and moody, it is the lake people bring first-timers and children to.

What makes Woods Canyon special is the contrast. Arizona is famous for heat, but the Mogollon Rim is a cool, high country of ponderosa pine, and this lake sits right on its lip. On a July afternoon when the desert is well over a hundred degrees, the air at the lake is crisp and pine-scented, the water is cold, and you may want a jacket by evening. That climate flip, only a couple of hours from the low desert, is why the Rim is Arizona's summer refuge, and Woods Canyon is its centerpiece.

The lake is kept deliberately quiet. Only electric trolling motors are allowed, so there is no roar of outboards, just the dip of paddles and the calls of birds. That calm draws wildlife: bald eagles and osprey fish the surface, great blue herons stalk the shallows, and elk and deer graze the forest openings at dawn and dusk. A gentle trail follows the shoreline all the way around, an easy walk under the pines that lets you circle the whole lake, cast from a dozen coves, and watch the water without ever getting far from the car.

Woods Canyon Lake sits above Christopher Creek, reached by turning off State Route 260 onto the short forest road (Forest Road 105) that drops to the water. The turnoff is well signed, and the last stretch is a paved, easy drive, but the whole thing is snow country: the road is typically closed from around December into spring, so this is a late-spring, summer, and fall destination. When it is open it is very popular, especially on summer weekends, so come early to find parking and a picnic table.

At the lake you will find a boat ramp, picnic areas, restrooms, and a small marina store run by a concessionaire, where you can rent a boat or kayak and pick up bait, tackle, and a fishing license. Beyond that store there are no services up here, so bring water, snacks, layers for the cool evenings, and a full tank of gas. Swimming is not allowed, so plan on fishing, paddling, walking the shoreline, and simply sitting in the cool pine shade, which is exactly what most people come to do.

For the best combination of pleasant weather, open facilities, and lake recreation, the warm-weather months are ideal, with weekday visits quieter than busy summer weekends.

On the water, wear a life jacket while boating or paddling, and be mindful of cold water and changing mountain weather. At this high elevation, afternoon thunderstorms can bring lightning, so plan to be off the open water if storms approach. Bring layers, since it is much cooler than the desert, and carry water. Watch children closely near the shoreline. The forest setting also means being mindful of wildlife and fire restrictions in dry seasons. Basic water and weather awareness keeps a lake visit safe and enjoyable.
