Lisa and Brian Herold did not set out to open a lodge. As Lisa tells it, they were driving through the Pine-Strawberry area, spotted a for-sale sign, and pulled over to look. They had run a few short-term rentals nearby and knew how thin good lodging was up here, so they took the leap, teamed up with co-owners Les and Kelli Powers, and spent close to three years building the place before opening the doors in the summer. The result feels handmade rather than franchised. The furniture leans on local craft, with live-edge wooden tables and juniper mantels made by an area woodworker and textiles sourced from Arizona artisans, so the rooms read rustic without feeling rough. On the ground floor is SIP at 5600, the owners' own cafe, a small coffee, deli, and wine bar that means your first cup of the morning is just down the stairs. Brian and Lisa tend to be around, and guests notice it, the kind of hosting where you are greeted by name and pointed toward the good trailheads.

The Room

There are eight rooms, four upstairs and four on the ground level, most of them kings with a double-queen in the mix. Each one centers on a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace with a native juniper mantel and a TV mounted above it, with live-edge wood furniture, a ceiling fan, and pendant reading lights. A small in-room bar with a sink and refrigerator plus a coffee maker handles the basics, and the bathrooms are open and modern, with generous counter space and curbless rain showers. The real feature is outside the glass: every room has its own patio or balcony, and they are pointed at the Mogollon Rim, the town below, and Strawberry Mountain.

The Grounds

The lodge shares one big open yard rather than parceling everyone off, and that yard is the social heart of the place. There is a private pergola, a turf game area, and lawn games like cornhole, croquet, and oversized Connect 4 and Jenga scattered around for whoever wants them. An open-air pavilion sits above it all and can be rented for events. Ponderosa pines close in on every side, so the light comes through soft and the nights go genuinely dark and starry. Front and center is SIP at 5600, the on-site cafe, which draws locals and guests alike for coffee and pastries by day and, in the warm months, live music and a glass of local wine as the pines cool off.

The Experience

This is a Rim Country stay, which means you slow down. Mornings start with coffee from the cafe carried back to your patio while the Rim catches the early sun. Days go to the natural bridge, the springs, and the trails that thread the ponderosa, and evenings come back to the yard, a lawn game, and, if the season is right, music drifting from the pavilion under a sky thick with stars. It is small, quiet, and unhurried, the antidote to a chain hotel off the interstate, run by people who clearly wanted it to feel like theirs and yours at once.
