The first cabin here was built in 1950 as the original Christopher Creek store and bar, and the place took its first overnight guest in 1953, which makes it one of the oldest continuously operated businesses under the Mogollon Rim. The cabins went up over the decades that followed, so each one has its own footprint and character rather than the sameness of a chain. What ties it all together is the setting: the whole property sits along spring-fed Christopher Creek at nearly six thousand feet, ringed by ponderosa pine, oak, and maple, with the water running cool through most of the year. It's rustic in the honest sense, worn smooth by decades of families who keep coming back, not staged to look old.

The Room

The heart of the place is the log cabins, and they are actual log cabins, each one a little different from the next. Every cabin has a fully equipped kitchen, a fireplace, a television, and a back porch, and all of them are either on the shore of the creek or looking out at it. Some sleep a couple in comfort; the larger ones add a loft of twin beds for kids, so a family can spread out. For smaller stays that don't need a kitchen, the exterior-door "Pony Express" motel units keep it simple with a bed, a small refrigerator, and a little loft the kids will claim. Budget travelers and groups can look at the "Trail Bunks," shared bunk accommodations built around a communal kitchen rather than a private one.

The Grounds

The grounds are built for lingering outdoors. There's a playground with slides and swings for the kids, picnic areas and covered ramadas for shade, fire pits for the evening, and built-in gas grills for cooking out. A grassy area with horseshoes handles the lawn games, and the creek itself is the main event, close enough that fishing and creekside wandering are just part of the day. A game room with shuffleboard and board games waits for the afternoon a storm rolls through.

The Experience

This is a Rim-country creekside stay, so the days shape themselves around the water and the woods. The creek is spring-fed and stocked with rainbow trout, so fishing is right at your doorstep, and the higher lakes like Woods Canyon and Willow Springs sit a short drive up the Rim for kayaking and more casting. Hiking trails run out from the property into the ponderosa, and evenings tend to end at a fire pit under a sky full of stars, with elk sometimes drifting through at the edges of the light.
