Montauk is famous for its beaches, but many of the best known sit outside town: the surf breaks at Ditch Plains, the walking dunes and long strand at Hither Hills, the wild bluffs out toward the point. Kirk Park Beach is the counterpoint, the beach that belongs to the village itself. It runs along the ocean at the western end of the little downtown, so a walk of only a few blocks takes you from a coffee on the main drag to your toes in the sand.
That easy access is the whole appeal. Where much of the East End guards its beaches behind resident-only parking and steep summer fees, Kirk Park is a genuinely public, come-as-you-are ocean beach. Across the road, Kirk Park gives the beach its name and its extra. It is also a fine beach for the edges of the day. Because it faces roughly west and south along this stretch of coast, evening light spills gold across the sand, and a slow sunset walk back toward the village lights makes a perfect end to a Montauk day, capped by dinner just steps from where you left the beach.
