Bridgehampton Ocean Beaches

What sets Bridgehampton's beaches apart from a generic stretch of coast is the land just behind them. Where much of the American shore is walled off by houses and boardwalks, here the dunes give way to open fields, some of them still farmed in potatoes, corn, and sod. Driving down a lane like Sagg Main Street to the ocean, you pass hedgerows and crops right up to the dune line, a landscape that has almost vanished elsewhere on the East Coast.

It is the beach to choose when you want the full sweep of open Atlantic and space to walk for a long way in either direction.

Mecox, a little to the west, is the quieter, more family-friendly choice, with a gentler feel and areas set aside for swimming next to the surf. Behind it lies Mecox Bay, and now and then the ocean and the bay connect through a temporary cut in the sand, a small natural drama that changes the beach from year to year. Between the two you can pick the kind of beach day you want, big and social or calm and easy.

These are public beaches, cared for by the town, but like most of the Hamptons shore they manage their limited parking with a permit system in the busy months. In summer the lots require a town beach parking permit, and several beaches, Mecox and Sagg Main among them, sell a limited number of weekday day passes for visitors. Outside the permit season the lots open up and the beaches are simply there for anyone who walks or drives to them.

The practical upshot is to plan a little. In peak summer, arrive early, sort out a day pass or permit ahead of time, or come on a weekday. In late spring and early fall the crowds thin, the parking eases, and the ocean is often still warm enough to enjoy, which for many visitors is the sweet spot for a Bridgehampton beach day.

From the village of Bridgehampton the ocean is just a few minutes south, down lanes that cross the farm fields before reaching the dunes. Sagg Main Beach lies at the end of Sagg Main Street, and Mecox Beach is a short way to the west, so it is easy to see both in a single visit and choose whichever suits your mood. Bring water, sun cover, and everything you need, since services at the beaches themselves are minimal.

Give yourself an unhurried few hours. Swim or surf in the guarded areas, walk the long stretch of open sand, and time your visit for morning light or the golden hour before sunset, when the beach empties out and the fields behind the dunes glow.
