Kings Island

Kings Island was born out of an older attraction. In the 1960s a smaller amusement park called Coney Island sat along the Ohio River east of Cincinnati, but it flooded repeatedly and had grown cramped. Its owners decided to build a bigger park on higher, safer ground, and in 1972 Kings Island opened on rolling land near Mason, taking many of the old park's rides and traditions with it.

From the start the park was designed around a grand central avenue, International Street, leading up to the replica Eiffel Tower. The tower, built at one-third the size of the Paris original, became the symbol of the park and a fixed point on the local skyline. Over the decades Kings Island expanded again and again, layering new coasters and areas onto that original plan.

Roller coasters have always been the beating heart of Kings Island. The park has been home to rides that broke records in their day, from towering wooden coasters to steel machines that launch, invert, and dive, and its lineup regularly ranks among enthusiasts' favorites in the country. There are gentler coasters too, built to give younger or more cautious riders their first taste of the thrill.

Rising above it all is the Eiffel Tower replica, whose elevator carries visitors to an observation deck for a wide view over the park and the green Ohio countryside beyond. For locals, though, its real fame is simpler and deeper, the shared childhood memory of a first big coaster and a long summer day in the sun.

Kings Island runs on a seasonal calendar, opening in spring and running through the fall, with the summer months at the peak of activity and crowds. Late spring and early fall can offer milder weather and shorter lines, and the park dresses up for special seasonal events, from summer nights to a popular fall program when the grounds take on a haunted, autumnal feel.

A visit rewards a bit of planning. The park is large, with hills and long walks between areas, so pacing matters, and arriving early or targeting weekdays can mean far more rides in a day.
