Waldameer Park and Water World

Waldameer began in the late nineteenth century as a picnic grove and trolley park at the end of a streetcar line, a common arrangement of the era in which railway companies built lakeside pleasure grounds to draw weekend riders. Families rode the trolley out to the shady grove above the lake to picnic, swim, and enjoy the cool air, and over time rides and attractions were added.

The park grew steadily through the twentieth century, adding coasters, a carousel, and eventually the water park, while keeping the traditional, family-oriented character it began with. Under long stewardship it has stayed independent and community-rooted, one of the older continuously operating amusement parks in the country and a fixture of Erie summers for generations.

The park is known for keeping classic rides alive alongside modern thrills. A vintage wooden roller coaster still rattles and dips near the lake, a treasured old-school ride, and a historic carousel and gentle antique attractions delight younger children. Newer steel coasters and thrill rides add speed and height for those who want it.

That mix is much of the appeal. Grandparents can ride the same coaster they rode as children while a new generation seeks out the modern rides, all in a compact, walkable park. The traditional midway feel, with its games and treats, rounds out an atmosphere that has stayed friendly and unpretentious.

Next to the rides spreads Water World, a full water park with tube and body slides, a wave pool, and a lazy river that make it a natural refuge on hot Erie summer days. Families often split a visit between the dry rides and the water park, cooling off between coaster laps.

Because both parks run on a summer season and the water park depends on warm weather, the timing of a visit matters. On a hot, clear day, though, the combination of amusement park, water park, and the nearby Lake Erie beaches makes Waldameer a full day of old-fashioned summer fun.

Waldameer's great advantage is its location at the entrance to Presque Isle State Park, the sandy peninsula that arcs out into Lake Erie with its beaches, trails, and lighthouses. Many visitors combine the amusement park with time on the peninsula, turning a single outing into rides, water slides, and a swim in the lake.

The Lake Erie shore is the ancestral homeland of the Erie people, for whom the lake is named, and later of the Seneca and other Haudenosaunee nations, whose communities were displaced from the region over the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, with descendant nations continuing elsewhere today. The city of Erie grew on the sheltered bay behind the peninsula, and its lakeside parks, Waldameer among them, became the place its residents go to reach the water.
