Shades Beach Park

Most people forget that Pennsylvania touches a Great Lake at all. In the far northwest corner of the state, a short strip of shoreline meets Lake Erie, and that ribbon of bluffs and beaches, orchards and vineyards is unlike anywhere else in the state. Shades Beach sits right on it, in Harborcreek Township just east of the city of Erie, where the wooded land drops away to a wide, restless inland sea that stretches to the horizon.

The park took its present shape after 1983, when the township took over a rundown county property and set about rebuilding it. Over the following years it was steadily improved, most notably with a modern boat launch that opened up the park's real asset, its direct access to the lake, for anglers and boaters. Today it is a tidy, well-used community park that also happens to be one of the more pleasant public spots to reach the Erie shore.

The beach at Shades is not the powdery sand of an ocean resort. It is a Great Lakes shoreline, cobbled and stony, and that is exactly why people love it. Decades of waves have tumbled old glass smooth and frosted, and the beach here has a reputation among collectors as a good place to hunt for it. Visitors walk the waterline heads-down, turning over stones, and come away with pockets of soft green, brown, and clear pieces.

Beyond the glass, the shore is a fine place to simply stand at the edge of the lake and take in its scale. Lake Erie behaves more like a sea than a pond, with real waves and weather and a horizon with no far shore in sight. Sunsets over the water can be spectacular, and on a clear day the openness of it all is a genuine surprise to anyone who thinks of Pennsylvania only as ridges and forests.

Back from the water, the park spreads across a shaded plateau of picnic groves, open lawns, and a playground, with pavilions and restrooms for gatherings and easy trails winding through the woodland and down toward the beach. It is a comfortable, unhurried place to spread out a blanket, let kids run, and walk off a long stretch of highway driving.

For many locals, though, the heart of the park is the boat launch. It is one of the better public launches on this part of the Erie shore, and on a summer morning the ramp is a steady parade of trailers heading out onto the lake to fish. Even if you are not launching a boat, it is a lively, friendly scene, and a reminder of how central the lake is to life in this corner of Pennsylvania.

Shades Beach is easy to reach, just off the lakeshore road east of Erie in Harborcreek, and it is free and open to the public. There is no lifeguard, and Great Lakes water can be cold and can develop strong currents, so anyone going in should use good judgment and keep an eye on conditions. The beach is stony, so water shoes are a smart idea for wading and glass-hunting.
