Icicle Creek Canyon

Icicle Creek pours out of the high country and, along part of its run, squeezes into a narrow granite gorge where the water races through a rock chute. The easiest way to see it is the Icicle Gorge loop, a gentle interpretive trail that follows the creek on both banks and crosses it on footbridges, with the gorge, the granite, and the surrounding forest in view the whole way. It is level enough for families and beginners and pretty enough that seasoned hikers come back for it anyway.

Along the lower canyon the creek slows into deep green pools rimmed with warm granite boulders, and on a hot summer day these become some of the best swimming holes in the region, just steps off the road. The water is snowmelt cold and bracing, the kind of dip that makes you gasp and grin at the same time, and the sun-warmed rocks are made for drying off afterward.

For serious hikers, Icicle Creek Canyon is famous as the front door to the Enchantments, a stretch of the Alpine Lakes Wilderness that many consider the most spectacular high country in Washington. From trailheads up the canyon, the Snow Lakes and Stuart Lake and Colchuck routes climb into a basin cradling hundreds of alpine lakes and ponds beneath craggy peaks that push toward nine thousand feet, with dramatic rock walls rising hundreds of feet above the water.

Reaching the core of the Enchantments takes a hard-won permit through a lottery and a long, steep day or an overnight, and it is not for the casual walker. But you do not have to summit anything to feel the pull of it: standing at the trailhead where the granite walls close in and the creek roars past, you understand why people plan their whole year around getting up here. The canyon is the threshold, and even a mile or two up any of its trails delivers real mountain scenery.

Icicle Road leaves Highway 2 at the west edge of Leavenworth and climbs the canyon for roughly sixteen miles, turning to forest road as it goes. The lower stretch is paved and easy; the upper road narrows and can be rough, and it is not kept open through deep winter, so the canyon is really a spring-through-fall destination, with the high trails clear only from about July into October. Most trailheads require a Northwest Forest Pass, and the popular lots fill early on summer weekends.

Give yourself a whole day and you can string together an easy gorge walk, a swim in a granite pool, a picnic by the creek, and a look up at the peaks from a wilderness trailhead, all without a long drive from town. It is the rare place where a family stop and a bucket-list alpine adventure share the same road, and it is the reason a stay in Leavenworth is worth more than a stroll through the shops.
