The rise and fall of a river town
Forestville grew in the mid-1800s as a crossroads trade center serving the farmers of the surrounding valleys, with a store, mills, and homes clustered near the river. For a time it thrived, a small hub where the countryside came to buy, sell, and gather.
Then the railroad passed it by. When the tracks went through a neighboring town instead, business drained away, and one merchant came to own nearly the whole village and its land. The town slowly emptied, until what remained was a nearly intact snapshot of a place caught at a single moment, which is what makes its restoration possible.
This valley's older story
Long before the crossroads town, this driftless bluff country was part of the homeland of the Dakota, whose name gives Minnesota its own, from the Dakota Mni Sota Makoce. Native peoples knew these valleys, streams, and caves for thousands of years before the settlers arrived.
The region's steep, unglaciated terrain, spared by the ice age, drew farmers to its rich valley bottoms in the 1800s.
