In August 2005 Hurricane Katrina came ashore right here, driving a storm surge some thirty feet high straight into Bay St. Louis. Nearly every structure in town was damaged or destroyed, the beachfront buildings were flattened, and in places the storm actually crumbled the streets along the shore. The town lost its last standing antebellum home and a great deal of its old fabric in a single terrible day.

What happened next is the real story of this shore. Bay St. Louis rebuilt, slowly and stubbornly, and Old Town came back as an arts-and-music town rather than fading away. The 100 Men Hall, an African American gathering place opened in 1894 that once hosted greats of the Chitlin' Circuit like Etta James and Big Joe Turner, still stands nearby as a marker of how deep the town's roots run.
