Show Low

Show Low's name comes from a piece of frontier lore that the town has embraced wholeheartedly. In the settlement's early days, two men who had been partners on a large ranch decided the property was not big enough for both of them and agreed to settle the matter with a game of cards, the winner to keep the land and the loser to move on.

As the story is told, one man said to the other that whoever could show low would win, and a low card, the deuce of clubs, decided it. The winner stayed and the ranch, and later the town, took the name Show Low, while the main street bears the name of the very card that clinched the deal. True in every detail or not, it is a story the town tells with pride.

Show Low lies at the edge of the White Mountains, a high, forested region of eastern Arizona shaped by ancient volcanoes and the great step of the Mogollon Rim. Much of this country lies within or beside the homelands of the White Mountain Apache, whose Fort Apache Reservation covers a vast stretch of forest, lake, and mountain to the south, and whose presence and stewardship remain central to the region.

Earlier peoples lived in and traveled this high country as well, and the mountains, meadows, and streams supported hunting, gathering, and settlement long before ranchers and loggers arrived. The forests that make the area so appealing today are part of a landscape with deep and ongoing human roots.

Show Low's greatest draw is the outdoor country that surrounds it. The White Mountains are dotted with lakes and reservoirs prized for fishing and boating, and the surrounding national forest offers hiking, mountain biking, camping, and wildlife watching among tall pines and mountain meadows.
