Olbrich Botanical Gardens

Olbrich grew out of a civic gift and a vision of a great public garden for Madison, and it has been expanding and deepening ever since. Its outdoor gardens are laid out in themed rooms, each with its own character, so a walk through leads from formal beds to naturalistic plantings to quiet corners by the water.

That the outdoor gardens are free to enter is central to their spirit. Olbrich is meant to belong to everyone, a place where neighbors walk on a summer evening and travelers wander among unfamiliar blooms, and it fits naturally into a city that prizes its parks and shorelines.

The garden's signature landmark is its Thai Pavilion, a sala richly carved and covered in gold leaf, set on an island and reached by a bridge over water. It was a gift arranged through the government of Thailand and Madison's Thai community, honoring a bond between the two, and it was crafted in Thailand before being assembled here.

Very few such pavilions stand outside Thailand, which makes Olbrich's a genuine rarity. Surrounded by a garden designed to complement it, the golden structure glows against the greenery, an unexpected and serene sight in the heart of Wisconsin, and a favorite for quiet contemplation.

For days when the outdoor gardens sleep under snow, the Bolz Conservatory keeps summer alive. Under its glass dome grows a lush tropical landscape of orchids, palms, and vines, warm and humid, often alive with the flutter of butterflies and the trickle of a waterfall, a green refuge in the depth of a Wisconsin winter.

Outdoors, the gardens are a place transformed by the calendar. Spring brings bulbs and blossom, summer the fullest riot of color, and autumn a turning of leaves, while winter reduces the beds to structure and quiet. There is a reason to visit in every season, and each shows Olbrich in a different light.

Olbrich sits in the Atwood neighborhood on Madison's east side, near the shore of Lake Monona, in a walkable part of the city with its own cafes and character. Starkweather Creek runs beside the gardens toward the lake, and the setting is calm and green.

Downtown Madison, with its Capitol Square, State Street, and university, is only a short drive to the west, so the gardens fold easily into a fuller day. Between the two lakes and its many parks, Madison is a city built for wandering, and Olbrich is one of its gentlest pleasures.
