Hershey's Chocolate World

Milton Hershey was a Pennsylvania farm boy who failed at several candy ventures before striking success with caramel, then sold that business and bet everything on a food that was, in America around 1900, a rare luxury: milk chocolate. He cracked the process of making it cheaply and consistently, and built a great factory in the middle of the dairy farms of his home county so the milk would be close at hand. Around the factory he built an entire town for his workers, and unlike the grim mill towns of the era he built it well, with comfortable homes, a trolley system, schools, parks, a grand hotel, and an amusement park. He and his wife Catherine, who had no children of their own, founded a school for orphaned boys and endowed it with essentially his entire fortune, so that the town's chocolate wealth flows to the school to this day. The company grew into one of the most recognized names in American candy, and the town became a destination in its own right.

When the working factory grew too busy and complex for public tours, Hershey replaced them with Chocolate World and its ride, so that visitors could still see, in a way, how the chocolate is made, and could keep coming to the sweet-smelling town that a single stubborn candymaker dreamed up.

The heart of Chocolate World is the tour ride, which welcomes visitors at no charge, a slow car trip through a simulated factory that follows the chocolate from cocoa pod to finished bar. You pass roasting cocoa beans, giant conditioning tanks, and molding lines, all narrated by the famous singing cows, a piece of gentle theater that has delighted children for decades and become a Pennsylvania rite of passage.

Beyond the ride, the building opens into a marketplace of chocolate. You can build your own candy bar on a small assembly line, sit down for a guided tasting, watch treats being made, and browse a wall of Hershey products in sizes and flavors you will not find at a corner store. The whole space is designed as an experience of the brand, warm, loud, and unmistakably sweet.

Hershey sits in the gently rolling farmland of south-central Pennsylvania, a region long shaped by Pennsylvania Dutch farming families of German descent, and just north of the famous Amish and Mennonite farm country of Lancaster County. This is some of the richest agricultural land in the East, the same dairy country whose milk made the chocolate possible.

The wider land was long the homeland of the Susquehannock and the Lenape peoples, who lived and farmed along the Susquehanna River and its tributaries before displacement in the colonial era. Neither is federally recognized in Pennsylvania today, and descendant communities continue elsewhere. The prosperous farms and small towns that surround Hershey today grew up on that older landscape.

Summer is the peak, when the neighboring amusement park runs full and families pour into town, making Chocolate World lively and crowded, best enjoyed early in the day. Spring and early fall are gentler, with pleasant weather for exploring the town's chocolate-themed streets and gardens between indoor stops.

The holiday season is a favorite, when the town lights up, the amusement park runs a Christmas event, and Chocolate World leans into the festive mood. Winter is otherwise the quietest stretch, an easy indoor outing on a cold day, warmed by the smell of chocolate that never really leaves the air.
