Central Michigan is part of the homeland of the Anishinaabe, the Three Fires Confederacy of the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi peoples. The Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan is a federally recognized nation descended from the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi bands of the Saginaw, Swan Creek, and Black River areas, and it remains a vital, self-governing community today.
