Whitefish is a walkable railroad and resort town in Montana's Flathead Valley, strung between the historic Great Northern depot and the shore of Whitefish Lake, with a ski mountain rising just behind it. Its Central Avenue is the kind of downtown people slow down for, lined with local shops, galleries, breweries, and restaurants, lively in every season.
The town began as a rough railroad camp nicknamed Stumptown for the stumps left after clearing the forest, and it grew up around the Great Northern Railway. Today those same rails still run, the depot still greets Amtrak's Empire Builder, and Whitefish has become a favorite base for exploring nearby Glacier National Park and the lakes and mountains of the valley.

From Stumptown to a mountain town
Whitefish was born of the railroad. In the early 1900s the Great Northern Railway pushed through the Flathead Valley, and a raw camp grew up in the cleared forest, earning the nickname Stumptown for the stumps that stubbled the ground. The railroad made the town, giving it a division point, a roundhouse, and a steady stream of workers and travelers.
The handsome depot at the head of Central Avenue, built in a rustic chalet style in the 1920s, still anchors downtown and still serves as a stop on Amtrak's Empire Builder, the long-distance train between Chicago and the Pacific Northwest. Arriving in Whitefish by rail, as travelers have for a century, remains one of the most fitting ways to reach it.
The mountain and the lake
Just above town rises Big Mountain, home to Whitefish Mountain Resort, a ski area known for deep snow, tree skiing, and the eerie snow-caked shapes locals call snow ghosts. In summer the mountain trades skis for chairlift rides, hiking, and mountain biking, with long views across the valley to the peaks of Glacier.
At the other edge of town lies Whitefish Lake, clear and cold beneath forested slopes, with a City Beach for swimming and boating in the warm months. Between the mountain and the lake, Whitefish packs a remarkable amount of outdoor life into a small footprint.
A base for Glacier and the Flathead
Whitefish makes an ideal base for the wider region. Glacier National Park, with its Going-to-the-Sun Road and glacier-carved valleys, lies a short drive to the east, and the town fills each summer with travelers headed for the park. To the south spread Flathead Lake, the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi, and the orchards and towns of the Flathead Valley.
This is Salish, Kootenai, and Pend d'Oreille homeland, peoples whose descendants belong to the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes and remain part of the valley today. The mix of railroad history, mountain recreation, and a genuinely walkable downtown is what gives Whitefish its enduring appeal.
