Temperance River Gorge

The North Shore is built of ancient volcanic rock, hard basalt and related stone laid down when this whole region was torn by rifting and flooded with lava more than a billion years ago. The rivers that run down to Lake Superior have spent the time since cutting through that rock, and the Temperance has cut deeper and narrower than most, boring a slot canyon barely wide enough in places to see across.

The potholes are the signature feature. Where the current traps pebbles and grit in a hollow, the swirling water spins them like a drill, grinding the rock into smooth, round wells that deepen over time. The gorge is lined with these potholes, some large enough to swallow a person, evidence of the patient, ceaseless work of moving water on solid stone.

This is the homeland of the Ojibwe, the Anishinaabe, whose Grand Portage community lies farther up the North Shore and whose people have lived along Lake Superior for generations. They know the great lake as Gitche Gumee, and the rivers running down to it, the Temperance among them, have long been part of a landscape of travel, fishing, and gathering woven through the fur-trade era and into the present.

The state name comes from the Dakota, Mni Sota Makoce, and the northern shore carries a shared Dakota and Ojibwe history. The scenic parks and trails along the North Shore today sit within that older Ojibwe world, and the shore remains a place of cultural meaning as well as recreation, best approached with that longer history in mind.

The main experience is a walk up the gorge trail, which climbs alongside the slot with the river roaring below. In places the path runs right at the lip, and hikers can look straight down into the narrow chasm where the water twists and drops through the potholes. It is a short trail but an intense one, packing a great deal of drama into a modest distance.

The trail connects to the Superior Hiking Trail, the long footpath that runs the length of the North Shore, so ambitious hikers can push on into the higher ground inland, where the Sawtooth ridges give long views over Lake Superior. Down at the bottom, the river spills across a rocky shore into the lake, a fitting end to its wild final run.

Temperance River State Park spreads on both sides of the highway, with campsites, a stony Lake Superior shoreline, and trails that lead to inland overlooks and waterfalls. The gorge is extremely dangerous, with slippery rocks, sheer edges, and powerful, churning water that has caused deaths, so stay on marked trails and behind railings, never climb over barriers or onto the rocks near the water, keep well back from the edges, and watch children extremely closely. The wet rock is treacherous, and anyone falling into the rushing river or potholes is unlikely to survive. Never wade or swim in the gorge.
