Brookings sits in Oregon's so-called banana belt, the warm southern pocket of a coast famous for being cool and moody, and Sporthaven Beach is its easygoing local strand. It runs along the harbor side of town at the mouth of the Chetco River, tucked below the south jetty, and unlike the dramatic, rock-stacked coves to the north it is simply a long, open, friendly beach.
The sand here is coarse enough to stay firm and clean underfoot, so the walking is easy and the beach stretches close to a mile south from the jetty. On one side the Pacific rolls in; on the other, just behind the dunes, sits the busy boat basin of the Port of Brookings Harbor, where charter and commercial boats slip out across a river bar known as one of the safest on the West Coast. It makes for a beach with something always going on.

Where the Chetco meets the sea
The Chetco River comes down out of the Kalmiopsis wilderness and empties into the Pacific right here, and the south jetty that steadies its mouth is the anchor of the whole beach. Anglers line the jetty rocks for bottomfish, salmon, and tuna, while others cast straight off the sand for surfperch, making this one of the more productive shore-fishing spots on the southern coast.
The river mouth also shapes the ecology. The estuary and shoreline draw shorebirds resting and feeding from late summer through spring, and the mixing of fresh and salt water keeps the tide pools lively. At a low, outgoing tide the exposed rocks reveal sea stars, anemones, and the small hidden animals of the intertidal zone, a natural aquarium for anyone willing to look closely and step carefully.
A rockhound's beach
This stretch of coast is well known to rockhounds, and Sporthaven is an accessible place to try it. The sand and gravel bars near the jetty and river mouth turn up agates, jaspers, and water-polished stones, especially after winter storms churn the beach and after a good tide has sorted the gravel. The best hunting comes at the lower tides, when more of the beach and its stone-strewn bands lie exposed.
It is the kind of low-pressure treasure hunt that keeps kids and grownups both busy for an hour: eyes down, pockets filling, the surf a steady rhythm beside you. Even when the stones are ordinary, the walking and the wide horizon make it worthwhile, and there is always the next tide's fresh sorting to bring you back.
