The largest LEGO model of its kind
The centerpiece of the museum is a vast permanent LEGO installation recognized as the largest of its kind, a block-by-block recreation of Manchester and the Amoskeag Millyard at the peak of the mill era. It captures the long brick mill blocks, the canals, the tenements, and the streets of a city built to run on textiles, all in miniature and populated by thousands of tiny figures.
Built from millions of bricks, the model is both a spectacle and a history lesson. A museum in a mill
Manchester grew up around the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company, which built a mile of brick mills along the Merrimack River and, for a time, the largest cotton-textile plant in the world. The city, its street grid, and its canals were all planned around the mills, and thousands of workers, many of them immigrants, made the cloth that built New Hampshire's largest city.
When the company collapsed in the twentieth century, the Millyard fell quiet, but in recent decades the great brick buildings have been revived for schools, offices, museums, and restaurants. The SEE Science Center is part of that revival, and touring it means walking the same floors where the industrial history it interprets actually happened.
