Ila Loetscher, a pioneering aviator in her youth, settled on South Padre Island and became famous as the Turtle Lady for her devotion to sea turtles. Beginning in the 1960s and 1970s she took injured turtles into her own home, nursed them, and used them to teach islanders and tourists why the animals mattered. Her homespun campaign helped turn the tide of local opinion toward protecting the turtles rather than harvesting them.

Out of her work grew Sea Turtle Inc, which became a formal rescue and education organization carrying on her mission after her death. What began as one woman caring for turtles in her living room is now a modern center with hospital facilities, holding tanks, and education programs that reach thousands of visitors, all rooted in the example she set.

The Kemp's ridley is the smallest sea turtle and the most endangered, and its story is bound to this stretch of coast. The great majority of the species nests on a single beach in Mexico, at Rancho Nuevo, just down the coast from Texas, and by the mid-twentieth century the population had collapsed to a fraction of its former numbers. A binational recovery effort, spanning Mexico and Texas, has worked for decades to bring the species back.
