Rough River Dam State Resort Park

The Rough River drains a broad piece of western Kentucky, and for generations its floods troubled the farms and towns downstream. In the 1950s the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers set out to tame it, building an earthen dam more than 1,500 feet long and well over a hundred feet high across the river valley near Falls of Rough. Construction ran from the mid-1950s to about 1961, and when the gates closed the rising water backed up into the surrounding hollows to form Rough River Lake.

The dam's main job was never recreation; it was flood control, holding back high water so the land below would not be swamped each spring. But a big new lake in gentle, wooded country was too good to leave alone, and Kentucky laid out a state resort park on its shore. One local footnote gives the place unexpected depth: this stretch of the Rough River country was once tied to a land grant George Washington held, drawn here by rumors of iron ore in the hills, long before any dam was imagined.

The heart of the park is the water. The Lake Ridge Nature Trail runs out along a wooded peninsula, and it has become a reliable spot to look for bald eagles, which have returned to hunt the reservoir's fish-rich water. Winter is often the best season for eagles in this part of Kentucky, when birds concentrate near open water, but a patient walker with binoculars has a good chance in the cooler months.

Beyond the eagles, the shoreline woods hold deer, wild turkey, and the woodland birds that thrive where forest meets water. The trails here are easy rather than strenuous, more a chance to stretch your legs and look up into the trees than a mountain hike, which suits the whole lazy-lake mood of the park.

The park sits near the tiny community of Falls of Rough in Grayson County, reached by state roads through the farm country off the Western Kentucky Parkway. It is an easy drive from Elizabethtown to the east or Owensboro to the northwest, and it makes a natural pause for anyone crossing western Kentucky who wants water rather than highway for a night.
