Payette Lake and City Beach

The shape of Payette Lake is the work of ice. During the last ice age a glacier estimated at around a thousand feet thick ground down out of the surrounding mountains, carving a long, deep trough into the granite highlands. When the climate warmed and the ice melted back, that trough filled with cold, pure meltwater and became the lake you see today, held in a bowl of forested ridges.

Because it is fed by snowmelt and mountain streams rather than a muddy lowland river, the water stays remarkably clear, and on a sunny day it shows off the deep blues and greens that people drive hours to see. The same origin explains why it is so cold: the lake sits at roughly five thousand feet, holds snowmelt most of the year, and rewards a summer swim with a real jolt, even in the warmest weeks.

City Beach is McCall's public front yard on the lake, and it is genuinely a town beach: free to walk onto, easy to reach on foot from the shops and restaurants of downtown, and set up for a family day with sand, lawn, a roped swim area, and a long dock to jump from. It looks straight up the lake, so the view from your towel is water, pines, and mountains rather than a parking lot.

From that shore the whole lake opens up. Summer brings out kayaks, paddleboards, sailboats, canoes, and motorboats, and quiet coves and small rocky islands dot the far end for those who paddle out. Anglers work the lake for trout and kokanee from shore and from boats. The pace is unhurried and family-friendly, the classic mountain-lake summer of swimming, picnicking, and watching the light change on the water toward evening.

Just up the eastern shore from City Beach, a long forested peninsula reaches out into the middle of the lake, and that whole tongue of land is Ponderosa State Park, more than a thousand acres of old ponderosa pine, quiet coves, trails, and campsites. It is the wild counterpoint to the town beach: a place to walk under big trees, find a small hidden beach of your own, watch for deer and osprey, and take in wide views from the point where the peninsula narrows.

Together the two give the lake its character. City Beach is the easy, social, walk-to-it side, while Ponderosa is the natural, unhurried side just a few minutes away. Between them you can spend a lazy afternoon on the town sand and a whole other day exploring forest trails and empty shoreline, all on the same clear water.

Deep, cold lakes tend to grow their own stories, and Payette Lake has one of the best. Long before the town was here, native people spoke of a spirit dwelling in the cold water, and in the early 1900s loggers and residents began reporting a long, dark shape that moved like no fish or log they knew, undulating across the surface and leaving a boat-sized wake. By the 1940s witnesses were describing something serpent-like and huge, and in 1954 the town held a nationwide contest to name it. The winning entry was Sharlie, and the name stuck.

Whatever swims or does not swim out there, Sharlie has become part of McCall's soul. The legend shows up around town and takes center stage each winter at the McCall Winter Carnival, when artists carve enormous blocks of snow and ice into the lake monster and dozens of other sculptures that fill the streets. It is a reminder that this is a place with a long relationship to its lake, in every season, not just a pretty view for a summer afternoon.
