Mars Hill and Big Rock Mountain

Mars Hill rises to roughly 1,700 feet above the surrounding farmland, prominent because the country around it is so flat and open. Its position in the far northeast, close to the easternmost edge of the country, gives it a claim to the earliest sunrise in the continental United States on parts of the calendar.

That honor is genuinely seasonal. Because of how the angle of sunrise shifts through the year, the title passes among a few northeastern points, including Cadillac Mountain on the coast and Mars Hill inland, so the claim is real but shared and date-dependent.
