Everyone knows the great white dunes of White Sands, but far fewer people ever see the place where that sand is born. Lake Lucero is a dry lakebed at the very lowest point of the Tularosa Basin, and it is here, more than anywhere, that the gypsum forming the world's largest white dunefield begins its journey.

The story runs on water and evaporation. Rain and snowmelt wash gypsum out of the surrounding mountains and carry it down into this closed basin, where it collects in the shallow lakebed. As the water evaporates under the desert sun, the gypsum crystallizes into glassy selenite, which weathers and breaks down into fine sand that the prevailing winds sweep northeast to build the dunes. Standing at Lake Lucero, you are standing at the source.

Where the white sand comes from

White Sands is a rarity because its sand is not quartz, the ordinary sand of most beaches and deserts, but gypsum, a soft mineral that dissolves in water. Normally rivers carry gypsum out to sea before it can pile up. The Tularosa Basin, though, is a closed basin with no outlet, so the gypsum has nowhere to go, and Lake Lucero is where it settles.

Water flowing off the San Andres and Sacramento mountains carries dissolved gypsum down to the basin floor and pools in the shallow lakebed. The desert sun evaporates the water, leaving the gypsum behind, first as a crust and then as crystals. Over time those crystals break down into the fine, bright grains that the wind lifts and carries northeast, endlessly rebuilding the dunes downwind.

Selenite crystals and the playa

In and around Lake Lucero, gypsum grows into a clear, glassy crystal form called selenite. Some of these crystals reach impressive size, glittering across the dry lakebed and giving a close look at the raw material of the whole dunefield before it is ground down into sand.

The lakebed itself is a playa, a flat pan of pale clay and gypsum that stays dry through most of the year and holds shallow water only after heavy rain. When it does flood, it becomes a shining sheet that mirrors the sky, and as it dries again it renews the cycle of crystal growth that feeds the dunes.

Life on the basin floor

The Tularosa Basin looks empty at a glance, but it holds a hardy community of desert life adapted to salt, gypsum, and heat. Salt-tolerant plants like pickleweed cling to the flats, and around the lakebed you may find the tracks of coyote, kit fox, and the small rodents they hunt in the cool of the night.

The wider dunefield is famous for animals that have turned pale to match the sand, among them a bleached lizard and light-colored mice found nowhere else, a living example of evolution at work. At Lake Lucero, the source, the setting is harsher and starker, a reminder of how demanding this basin is on anything that lives here.

Seasons and visiting

Because Lake Lucero lies deep in the basin next to White Sands Missile Range, it is not freely open the way the main dunes are. Reaching it means going on a ranger-led route offered by the park, which is well worth arranging in advance for anyone who wants to understand where the sand comes from.

The cooler months are far more comfortable for a visit to the exposed basin floor, where there is no shade and the summer heat is punishing. After rain the lakebed may hold water and the drive in can be muddy, while dry spells bring the best crystal viewing. Whenever you go, bring sun protection, water, and time to take in the wide, silent country ringed by mountains.
