Inspiration Peak State Wayside

Inspiration Peak is part of a belt of hills that the last ice age piled up across west-central Minnesota. As the great glaciers melted and retreated, they dumped enormous quantities of rock, sand, and soil in ridges and mounds, leaving a landscape of rolling hills pocked with countless lakes and ponds.

This kind of terrain, called a moraine, gives the region its distinctive rumpled look, and Inspiration Peak stands among the highest of those glacial hills. From its top the whole story of the ice age is spread out below, in the hummocky hills and the water-filled hollows between them.

The lakes and hills of this region are part of the homeland of the Dakota and, further north and east, the Ojibwe, or Anishinaabe. These waters and highlands were traveled, hunted, and fished for generations, and the abundance of lakes made the whole region a place of gathering and passage.

The name Minnesota comes from the Dakota Mni Sota Makoce, the land where the waters reflect the sky, and standing atop Inspiration Peak, looking out over lake after lake catching the light, it is easy to see how the name fits the country below.

The hill owes much of its renown to Sinclair Lewis, the first American to win the Nobel Prize in Literature and a native of nearby Sauk Centre. Lewis wrote of Inspiration Peak in glowing terms, describing the view from its summit and urging readers to go and see it for themselves.

That endorsement, from a writer often sharply critical of small-town Minnesota, turned a modest hilltop into a minor pilgrimage. To climb it today is to see the country through his eyes, and to understand why even a hometown skeptic could not help but praise the view.

Reaching the overlook means a short walk up a steep path to the crown of the hill, where the trees give way and the land opens in every direction. The reward comes all at once, a panorama of hills, lakes, woodlots, and farm fields rolling to the edge of sight.

Summer paints the view deep green, while fall lights the hills and woodlots with color and offers some of the clearest air of the year. Winter opens the long views further as the leaves fall, though the path can be slick, and any clear day rewards the climb with one of Minnesota's finest and least-known vistas.
