Heisler Park

The park takes its name from Howard Heisler, an early Laguna landowner from the days when the coastline was passing out of the big ranch holdings and into a seaside town. What his name marks today is a landscaped clifftop park, an unusually pretty stretch of public bluff given over entirely to lawns, flower beds, shade trees, and a walkway that hugs the very edge of the drop to the sea.

Walking it is the whole point. The paved path runs the length of the park just back from the cliff, and it is nearly flat and easy, so anyone can do it. Benches and gazebos are set at the best angles, and the overlooks come one after another, each framing a slightly different piece of coast: a cove here, a rock arch there, the surf breaking on the reefs below. Sculptures from a rotating public art walk stand along the way, so a stroll here is part garden, part gallery, part ocean lookout.

Stairways drop from the bluff to a string of small coves at the base of the cliff, and at low tide these coves become tide pools. Water left behind in the rock fills with sea stars, anemones, hermit crabs, urchins, small fish, and clinging snails, and because the steps put you right at the water, this is one of the easiest good tide pools to reach in all of Laguna. The reef here runs south toward Main Beach, so at a very low tide you can explore a long stretch of it.

The whole shoreline lies inside the Laguna Beach State Marine Reserve, the strictest kind of protection California gives its coast, where it is against the law to take or harm any living thing, any rock, or any shell. The rule for visitors is simple and firm: look, do not touch. Do not pick animals up, pry them off the rock, turn stones over, or carry anything away. Step only on bare rock, tread lightly, and let the pools be. Check a tide chart and go at the lowest tide for the fullest display.

Because the park sits so high above open water, it is one of the best free spots in town to watch the ocean. Gray whales pass on their long migration in the cooler months, dolphins cruise the near water much of the year, and the west-facing overlooks turn the evening sky and the Pacific into one long sunset show. Bring a jacket, claim a bench, and let it happen.

The park is also the north end of an easy coastal walk. A path links Heisler Park south along the bluffs to Main Beach and the heart of downtown, so you can string the two together into one seaside stroll, gardens and overlooks at one end, the village boardwalk and swimming beach at the other, with coves and tide pools the whole way between.

Heisler Park runs along Cliff Drive just north of downtown Laguna Beach, an easy walk up from the village or a short drive. There is no fee to enter, but parking is limited street parking along Cliff Drive and nearby lanes, and it fills quickly on warm days, so come early or leave the car in town and walk. Restrooms, benches, gazebos, and picnic tables are on site.

Give yourself an hour or two: walk the full length of the bluff path, stop at the overlooks, and take a stairway down to a cove to poke through the tide pools at low water. Time the visit for evening if you can, when the light goes gold and the sunset fills the whole western sky. It is a small park by the mile, but few stretches of public coast anywhere pack in this much beauty for so little effort.
