Blenko Glass

William Blenko, an English glassmaker, spent years trying to establish a glassworks in America before finally succeeding, and the company settled in Milton in the early 1920s. It arrived in a region already rich in glassmaking: the Ohio and Kanawha valleys had cheap natural gas, good sand, and a skilled immigrant workforce, and glass factories once dotted this part of West Virginia. Blenko is among the survivors, still using furnaces and hand methods that most of the industry long ago abandoned for machines.

The company's early fortune came from stained glass. Blenko supplied the colored sheet glass for windows in churches and public buildings across the United States, and its cathedral glass remains a signature product. Over the decades the studio also grew a line of decorative and tableware glass in bold colors, and the interplay between the two, architectural glass and household pieces, has defined the company ever since.

The Blenko water bottle, with its distinctive ridged body and pinched neck, is the piece most West Virginians picture when they hear the name. Simple, functional, and beautiful, it became a fixture in kitchens across the state and a symbol of home for many. Each year the company releases a limited-edition designer water bottle in a new color and form, an event collectors watch closely and often line up for.

Blenko's reputation among designers goes deep. Mid-century decorators prized its colors and free-blown shapes, and the company's archive holds a remarkable run of forms designed by some of the leading glass designers of the twentieth century. The result is that a factory in a small West Virginia town has left its mark on the history of American design far out of proportion to its size.

From the observation gallery, visitors look down on the hot shop where the real magic happens. A worker gathers a glowing blob of molten glass from the furnace, rolls and blows it, reheats it, and shapes it with tools and pads of wet newspaper until a recognizable form emerges. The choreography of the team, one gathering, another blowing, another shaping, is a craft passed hand to hand over generations.

Because everything is made by hand and breath, no two pieces are exactly alike, and small bubbles or variations are part of the character of hand-blown glass. Seeing the process makes the finished pieces in the shop below feel less like products and more like the outcome of real skill and heat and effort.

The grounds include a small stained-glass window display and a pond, and the shop is the place to find both current pieces and outlet-priced seconds.
